Dan Flahavan Portola Valley CA Death, Obituary – Athletic Director has passed away

Dan Flahavan, the Athletic Director and P.E. teacher at Portola Valley School District, has died at the age of 54. Flahavan, a fixture in the district since 1999, was found unresponsive at his home late Wednesday evening; the cause of death is pending investigation.

During his tenure, Flahavan oversaw all middle‑school athletics programs, including basketball, soccer, track & field, tennis, and the district’s popular “Panthers Camp.” He also served as a mentor to new teachers and coached multiple district championship teams. In recent years, he championed mental‑health initiatives for student‑athletes and secured grants to modernize athletic facilities.

“Dan’s impact was immeasurable,” said Principal Gail Yothers. “He was a friend and mentor to students and staff alike.” School offices will remain open this week for counseling services, and all scheduled athletic events have been postponed through the weekend as the community mourns.

A public viewing will take place Friday, April 25, from 4:00–6:00 p.m. at the Portola Valley Community Church, with a memorial service to follow Saturday at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the Flahavan family requests contributions to the Portola Valley Student Assistance Fund.
